Admission Requirements for All Candidates

Wondering what else it takes to get into NYCPM? Here’s what you’ll need:

Bachelor’s Degree (Recommended) or 90 Credits

We recommend a completed bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university or its equivalent if completed in a foreign country, but can apply after completing 90 credits of undergraduate work at an accredited college or university.

Specific Pre-requisite Coursework

Our admissions committee has no preference as to your major field of undergraduate study; though we strongly recommend completing courses in upper-level sciences—such as Biochemistry—to better prepare for the pre-clinical curriculum. All candidates for admission must have completed one academic year of each of the following prerequisite courses, with no grade lower than a C-:

  • Biology (lecture & lab)
  • General Chemistry (lecture & lab)
  • Organic Chemistry (lecture & lab)
  • Physics (lecture & lab)
  • English (Literature, composition, or other writing intensive courses)

The profile of the average incoming first-year student includes a 3.2 GPA. To be most competitive, you should possess a science and overall GPA over 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

MCAT

You must take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) during the year that you are applying or within three years of enrollment.

The profile of the average incoming first-year student has an overall MCAT score of 494.

Letters of Recommendation

All candidates must submit three letters of recommendation or a pre-health committee evaluation. Individual letters of recommendation can be from a DPM or other medical professional, preferably a science or other academic professor, academic advisor, or work supervisor.

Command of English Language

All candidates must be able to speak, write, and comprehend English. Those from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate these abilities as described for international students.

Meet Professional and Technical Standards

January Entering Class

Missed the window to apply for our Fall semester? Want a slower transition to the rigors of a medical school curriculum? NYCPM offers the opportunity to be considered for a January entering class.

Things to keep in mind: Students entering in January will enroll in a 4½-year program starting with a decelerated 2½-year pre-clinical program. The second term for students in this program will join the September entering class, but with a modified schedule extending into sophomore year.

Tuition and fees are prorated for the January entering class to remain consistent with those for all other full-time students.

Articulation Agreements

NYCPM has established Articulation Agreements with many schools across the country. These agreements allow students to enter NYCPM as first-year students after their junior year of college. The undergraduate institution accepts NYCPM’s first-year curriculum in lieu of the student’s senior year. The student taking part receives an undergraduate and medical degree in seven years. Selection of Students

It’s the responsibility of the Admissions Committee to select candidates for podiatric medical education. The Admissions Committee is composed of representative members of the pre-clinical and clinical faculty and the Associate Dean of Admissions.

Because there are far more applicants than openings, admission is selective, and interview is by invitation only.

Admission decisions are based on prior academic achievement, community and leadership activities, letters of reference, and personal interview. Selection for admission is made without regard to race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, religion, color, handicap, age or national origin.
