Dr. Swartz has dedicated more than 35 years to researching medical education and the assessment of clinical competence. His focus has been on using standardized patients to teach clinical skills. In 1991, he introduced the standardized patient methodology to eight medical schools in New York City. He has published over 50 articles in this field, laying the foundation for the ECFMG Clinical Skills Assessment (1998) and the USMLE Step 2CS (2004) Examinations. He is the author of Swartz Textbook of Physical Diagnosis: History and Examination, now in its Ninth Edition.
