New York College of Podiatric Medicine Touro University (NYCPM Touro) is pleased to announce a major advancement for the podiatric profession in New York State. Last month, Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law a significant expansion of the New York State scope of practice for podiatrists. The legislation will take effect 18 months from the date of the Governor’s signature.

“This landmark achievement enhances both educational and clinical opportunities for current and future podiatric students, residents, and practitioners. The updated scope expands podiatric practice to allow treatment of foot and ankle pathology with fewer restrictions and authorizes qualified podiatrists holding the Advanced Ankle License to perform total ankle replacements (TAR). This new legislation will also increase access to care for patients with skin and wound issues and surgical care related to the foot and ankle,” said Dr. Michael Trepal, Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

These changes will enable NYCPM Touro students and residents to obtain comprehensive clinical training within New York State, eliminating the need to seek expanded-scope experiences in neighboring states. Graduates who receive this advanced training in other states are now much more likely to return to New York to practice and be able to fully utilize their training to benefit New Yorkers. The enhanced scope is also expected to increase clinical volume and broaden case diversity across the New York Foot Clinics system.

“NYCPM Touro is proud to have four faculty members who currently hold Advanced Ankle privileges—placing them among a select group of podiatrists statewide with this distinction,” continued Trepal.

“We congratulate the podiatric community on this historic milestone,” said Touro University President Dr. Alan Kadish. “We extend our sincere appreciation to Governor Kathy Hochul as well as the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) and the many individuals whose dedication, advocacy, and expertise made this advancement possible. We know our students and patients will benefit from this expanded scope of training and practice.”
